M'ANAM (“My Soul” in the English language) is one of the most exciting new vocal ensembles to emerge in recent years and grew naturally from the legendary ANÚNA. Formed in 2018, the members come from the island of Ireland and beyond, encompassing a huge range of musical experiences and yet they are unified together with one voice and one vision.

Their songs and texts date back as far as the 9th century, through to music created by the men themselves and their Artistic Director Michael McGlynn. The men are as comfortable singing an elegy for a dead Viking in Icelandic (“Deyr Fé”) as they are reinterpreting the classic English folk song “The Sheep Stealer”. M’ANAM are redefining the accepted ideas of male-voice singing with their natural, unforced and immediate sound.

Their first album will be released in early 2019, and two singles have been released in 2018 - Bandó Ribineann and The Sheep Stealer.

They are featured artists on the opening track “Clarity” on the new album by jazz-infused post-rock band mouse on the keys entitled “tres”. M’ANAM feature on the soundtrack of the new World of Warcraft (Blizzard) video short "Warbringers ~Jaina".

Brilliant to be performing for the first time in the Netherlands at the amazing De Doelen in Rotterdam on February 16th! You can find out about ticket availability on the Live page or HERE.

Great to get the cover for “The Sheep Stealer” - out this Friday.

Brand-new single released Friday November 16th. “The Sheep Stealer” features a solo by Fergus who can be found singing obsessively in the folk venues and sessions around Dublin. It’s appropriate that the video, filmed and edited by Michael, features the guys singing at Dame Tavern in the centre of the city, and we think it brilliantly captures the late-night ambience of Dublin by night. Fergus says about the song -

"The first time I heard the Sheep Stealer was sung in the Teachers Club on Parnell Square, in the same Georgian building where James Joyce took Singing Lessons. It haunted me, writing and rewriting itself over and over again in my head for a long time afterwards.

The narrator of the story begins with the intention of remaining unabashed, though his journey has already ended. He is raising a glass one last time before he must accept his fate. The song is set in a world which is black and white; survival and death, in some ways a welcome escape from our saturated, needlessly complicated lives.

A year after hearing it and with much convincing Michael McGlynn of its potential worth, together we found multiple sources for the song originally titled 'The Brisk Lad'. This version of the song M'ANAM sing is a combination of many of these together, with a few unexpected twists and turns, music living and breathing in this world, not some archaic past.

I think we have captured exactly how I felt when hearing the story for the first time in the heart of Dublin, a city filled with traffic, fights, tragedy, celebration and friendship."

The end is in sight for our new album. In late August we hit the legendary Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin with the assembled men of M’ANAM who travelled from Iceland, Slovenia and the Netherlands to be with us. We took a few snaps - loads to look forward to. Mixing begins in late November with Brian Masterson at Soundscape Studios in Dublin. All images by Nejc Rudel.

M’ANAM feature as vocalists on the soundtrack of the animated short created by Blizzard entitled Warbringers: Jaina. Warbringers is a series of animated shorts serving as a prelude to World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. It presents the tales of Jaina Proudmoore, Sylvanas Windrunner, and Queen Azshara during pivotal times in their lives. The teaser for the series is released July 16, 2018.

M’ANAM are releasing their first tentative toe-in-the-water as a single, the awesome Bandó Ribineann. The song is written by Michael and is from an old Scottish source, and this pretty fantastic video was filmed in Dame Tavern in Dublin. Available on all digital platforms.

Bandó ribinnean a shioda's de ribinnean bands of silken ribbons
Bandó ribinnean á ruidealadh mu'd cheann-sa bands of ribbons woven about my head

Theid mi null air an abhuinn
Thig mi nall air an abhuinn

I'll go across the river
I'll come across the river

Hear the river calling.

Great interview featured on the website HERE with mouse on the keys where they discuss the collaboration with M’ANAM for the recording of their latest, highly successful album “tres”.
